Try different costs and income

Career Switch Calculator

Rent and bills do not pause while you retrain. Try different training costs and pay assumptions to see how the switch could affect your budget. This is an example, not a pay forecast. You can enter extra tools, travel, childcare and benefit replacement costs below. Taxes, ordinary household bills, debt, overtime and actual employer pay are not fully modeled.

Enter only costs not already included in your training budget or other monthly costs. Each field accepts $0 to $100,000; larger or invalid entries keep the previous value. Zero means not entered, not verified free. These inputs stay on this page and are not shared.

One-time costs included: $2,500. Monthly extra costs included: $450. Recurring costs apply for the selected income-gap months, not automatically for a full year.

Check your first-year costs before using this estimate
  • Ask when applications, classes, or paid work could actually start. Include any waiting period in your income-gap assumption.
  • Ask for tuition, exam fees, tools, protective equipment, and required deposits. Include one-time costs in your training budget only once.
  • Estimate extra travel, childcare, and benefit replacement costs. Include recurring costs in monthly transition costs only once.
  • Confirm attendance days and whether you could keep your current job. A listed median wage is not an offer of starting pay.
  • Use your own conservative assumptions where facts are unknown. Test a delayed start or lower income before committing.

This is an income-gap scenario, not a complete household budget or a month-by-month forecast. Check your ordinary bills separately. No cost or waiting time in this checklist is a verified amount.

This estimates how long your savings could cover an income gap and extra costs. It is not financial advice. It leaves out taxes, benefits, debt, and income from other people in your household.

How this estimate works

Scenario uses the TX pathway record and May 2025 BLS OEWS wage percentiles. Training and income paths are assumptions, not a forecast.

The training-cost estimate divides the cost by part of the example starting income. It does not show the full cost or benefit of changing jobs. It leaves out benefits, taxes, tools, travel, childcare, debt, and lost wages.

Example income in year 5

P90 wage, 90% earn at or below this: $81,860

Could your savings cover the change?

The total includes one-time costs and the selected income-gap months. Months your savings could last uses the monthly gap and recurring costs only; it does not deduct one-time costs from savings.

Your savings could cover the estimated monthly income gap and extra costs for 7 months.

Plan your first 12 months with your own figures

These are your assumptions, not verified start dates or pay. Leave unknown income blank; enter zero only if you expect no income. Use take-home pay, not the career wage benchmark. All values stay on this page.

This monthly plan is separate from the shorter savings estimate above. The wait comes first, then training, then assumed paid work. Extra monthly costs above apply throughout these 12 months. Training and tools costs above are charged once in the first month after waiting, even if you enter zero training months. Set costs that do not apply to zero above. Do not count them again in household spending.

Enter your waiting and training assumptions to show the monthly plan. Enter zero if that phase does not apply.

Example pay over 5 years: switch or stay

This example assumes your current-job pay rises by 2.5% a year. It compares that with example trade pay. It does not predict your employer, hours, taxes, or benefits.
